Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
