The English and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a group together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks before the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
