In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
