EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
